St Kilda Botanical Gardens
One of our favourite locations for nature playgroup, the St Kilda Botanical Gardens are one of St Kilda’s many gems. With a large variety of natural and well maintained environments to enjoy, the Botanical Gardens are ideal for children and parents of all ages!
You’ll often find us enjoying the many wonders of these gardens, including some of these amazing spaces:

THE ROSE GARDEN
Filled with over 100 species of roses, the Rose Garden is a wonderful section for our smallest seedlings to enjoy. Full of bright coloured rose beds surrounding a small raised pagoda, the Rose Garden is the perfect place to take non-walking children for tummy time!
Older children will also enjoy the many amazing species of rose bush and all of their delightful smells – plus you can always play a game of spot the bees – just beware of getting to close, to avoid the thorns!
THE NATIVE AUSTRALIAN GARDEN
When visiting the Native Australian Garden in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens, you’d be forgiven for thinking you had left the city entirely! Running along the Dickens St. edge of the gardens, this area is filled with native Australian plants and scrub. Split into two sections, this area follows a short path through many tall trees and short bushes: perfect for any little adventurous little Saplings!
Ideal for walking toddlers, this section is an amazing area for exploration: while wandering along the path, be sure to help your Sapling find the many varities of native Euclyptus tree and grasses planted along the paths edge... and you can even try your luck spotting the many bugs that call this area home!
We recommend children exploring this area are closely accompanied by an adult.
THE GREENHOUSE
A tropical oasis in the heart of the Botanical Gardens, the Greenhouse is filled with many beautiful plants and waterbeds. Located between the Blessington St. and Herbert St. entrances, the Greenhouse is home to a more humid environment with many unique smells and sounds. This space is a wonderful environment to share a slow exploration along the wooden path with your Seedlings and Saplings – there is a lot to see, and benches to rest on and admire the view!
This space can comfortably accomodate a pram, and is ideal for children of all ages with close adult supervision. The Greenhouse has 2 small ponds so supervision is strongly recommended near both of these areas – but parents will find themselves just as excited as their Seedlings, to spot the beautiful fish in each pond!
Veg Out Community Garden
A true oasis in the heart of St Kilda, Veg Out is a free, volunteer run community garden situated near Luna Park and St Kilda Beach. An excellent location for nature exploration, Veg Out is home to a huge variety of fruit, vegetable and native Australian plants, plus bugs like butterflies and bees, and even some friendly neighbourhood chickens!
As a shared space with many of the areas local visual artists, the gardens are also full of oddities and interesting sculpture pieces. There is so much to see and discover at Veg Out, including visiting their local market on the first Saturday morning of each month.
You’ll be sure to find us admiring a number of the plots at Veg Out, including:

THE GARDEN PLOTS
Veg Out is a special placed, filled with many garden beds cared for by members of the local St Kilda community! Since each garden is looked after by someone different, there are many unique, interesting and beautiful plants and insects to see. Seedlings will love to find edible plants, such as snow peas and herbs, or admire the lovely flowers in every colour! You might event find some funny and silly sculptures throughout the garden, and smell some delightful and sometimes stinky smells!
THE CHICKEN COOP
Your Seedlings will be sure to love visiting the chooks at Veg Out – you’ll also spot some kooky sculptures and a beautiful citrus tree offering them shade inside their coop. Listen carefully to hear the noises they make, and watch them peck at their leafy green food scraps!
THE PAGOLA
A lovely pagola offers shade in the central yard of the Veg Out gardens – and here you’ll see a shock of fabulous pink Bougainvillia’s! A perfect stage for our smallest and largest Seedlings to perform, the pagola is also filled with fallen Bougainvillia petals, perfect for collection: use them as confetti to celebrate a song, or collect them and arrange an ephemeral artwork!
THE VINTAGE TRUCK
For all those toddler truck-lovers, there’s a very cool vintage ute parked in the Chaucer Street edge of the gardens. Children will enjoy admiring the trucks heritage features and making lots of toot toot and beep beep sounds around it!
St Kilda Beach and Foreshore
One of St Kilda’s most special assets is that it’s a vibrant metropolitan area, right on the beach. We love visiting the beautiful foreshore and beach area in St Kilda West, which also includes the famous St Kilda Pier, and long tidal flats.
St Kilda West Beach also features a wild and beautiful native garden, cared for by the local council, which boasts many species of natire grasses and scrub. This area is amazing for exploring with walking children, and is pram accessible along the timber pathway.
St Kilda West Beach and the Foreshore offer such a wide range of terrain, textures, nature and wildlife – we are so lucky to live alongside it every day!
